  1. I believe quote three by Bordo is true. Bordo is trying to say that women are expected to care about what others think about them and take pride in there appearance. When a woman doesnt embody "vanity" she's breaking societies rules. If a man was to be careless with his appearance it wouldn't be out of the norm. Men are expected to be grunge and not so high maintence. In fact, when men start to care about how they physically look their peers start to question just how manly the person really is. Men have a free ticket to slack off on their looks and not get prosecuted for it, a luxury women do not hold.

In my GAP ad the man is seen with work boots, dirty jeans and facial hair. The man is effortlessly standind, he could careless about how he is being procived. A woman would have to stand around in high-heels, make-up, and nicely clothed to be selling the same object.

  2. I really like your interpretation of the quote as well as the example you provide, based on your ad. Particularly, I think it is interesting that you refer to men's right to slack of as a 'luxury' as it is reminiscent of the Male Privilege List we discussed. Also, the comparison you describe between a male model in the Gap ad,and if the model were a woman, is interesting. I am curious to know, whether you think the male model in the Gap ad is playing with the 'males do, and females appear' in ads which Bordo mentiones in her chapter. Do you think the male model is kind of teasing, daring us, the viewers, to look at him?

  3. The Model in the GAP ad seems to me as a the rock type. He isnt comitting a specific action but it does seem like he invites the viewers gaze, I guess you can say he's flaunting his manliness.

Men do have a certain luxury that women dont. Imagine what people would say about a woman walking around with knots in her hair, sloppy clothes, and hairy. If men walk around with an unkept beard and throws anything on, that'll just be him being a guy.
